What is Animal Welfare and why is it important?

There is no doubt about the fact that a lot of animals are used for carrying backbreaking loads in searing heat. According to searches, up to 200 million animals worldwide do the job of trucks, tractors, and taxis. Isn’t it brutal?
Moreover, despite being sick and injured the animals are not provided veterinary care. Thus to help protect the rights of such animals, the government has designed a set of rules and regulations for the pet owners which makes it important for them to concentrate on animal care. And why not! Even they deserve pet care vet, don’t they?

So, animal welfare is a weapon to fight against the mistreatment and degradation of animals all over the world. Here is more detailed study about why animal welfare is so important –
Maintain Livelihoods
Despite being a developed world, there are still many areas across the globe where animals are used for plow the fields, haul produce to market, and transport the sick to hospitals. Thus to maintain the livelihood of those people who are dependent on animals, it makes it important for them to consider animal welfare.
Legality
With increasing brutality on animals, the law has defined certain rules and regulations for the owners which state that anyone who breaks the law will be punished depending on the severity of the crime.
Moral duty
Isn’t it our moral duty to protect animals from the pain and sufferings? Of course, it is! After all, they also deserve to like live humans.
Economic welfare
Poor animal welfare puts a bad impact on the economic output of the people who are dependent on the animals and so do it impacts the economic output of the country. Thus to maintain the economic welfare of both the country and people, it is important to consider the animal veterinary care.

Apart from these, there are ‘Five Freedoms for Animal Welfare’ was outlined by the Farm Animal Welfare Council in 1968. These are to be followed under all circumstances. So, without much ado let us get started with 5 thumb rules of Government –
  1. Freedom from hunger and thirst – This rule defines that animals have a right to drink fresh water and healthy diet.
  2. Freedom from discomfort – In this rule, the government states that animals have right to stay in a good shelter and a comfortable area.
  3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease – Just as human needs proper medical checkup and treatment, animals are also no different. Thus it is important to make sure that they are free from all pain, injuries, and disease.
  4. Freedom from fear and distress – Animals too can be a victim of mental suffering. Thus it is important to make sure they are free from fear and distress.
  5. Freedom to express normal behavior – Lastly, animals too should have the right to get sufficient space and proper facilities so that they feel at ease.

Hence, 5 thumb rules defined by the government are important to follow in order to ensure animal’s welfare all across the world.
